Subject: Great trip!

Thanks for setting me-up with John Iverson. He was very professional & personable. He took me right to the fish. He showed me how to locate & then taught me how to catch these big beauties. He's a cool guy & I really had a great experience. You can be sure that I'll tell all of my friends about Ya'll & I hope to see you again soon, in "The Big Easy."

Thanks Uptown Angler,

Black Drum on the fly

Saturday, October 2, 2010. New Orleans
Jeff Miller landed this 30 plus lb black drum on a Del Brown Permit Crab and an Orvis Helios 8wt rod. On this half day trip on the east side of the Mississppi River Jeff also landed speckled trout and redfish. J. Smith, Uptown Angler

First cool front of the season

New Orleans, September 29, 2010. This week has brought cooler weather to the marshes of southeastern Louisiana. With that will come clearer, shallower water. Temps have been dropping into the 60s at night and the highs in the low 80s during the day. This might not seem like much cooler weather, but it is. And its welcome on the heals of all those eastern breezes that blew so much water into the marsh. These northerlies will get those water levels back to normal. Another front coming through this weekend. Redfishing for the big reds should start very soon. J. Smith, Uptown Angler

High water fishing on the east side of the River

September 25,2010. Delacroix, LA

The wind has been blowing out of the east for weeks now. This happens at the end of August and the beginning of September each year in the delta of the Mississippi River. For sight casting to redfish this creates very high water conditions. Two plus feet above normal at times. These high water conditions create special considerations. (1) even in clearer water, which is generally not the case at the end of the summer, the redfish are scarce in the big ponds. The fish tend to move into the grass in pursuit of crabs and baitfish (which also move into the marsh for meals). This makes it practically impossible to pursue these fish with a flats skiff. (2) Therefore, it is necessary to fish in water you couldn't ordinarily fish because it would be too shallow under ordinary conditions. So you have to explore and find areas that would be practically dry the rest of the year. (3) The third consideration is early. These fish feed early and the feeding stops early. Start fishing at daybreak. By noon its over. Good luck.
